Carl Douglas Conrad

Carl Douglas Conrad, better known to those that loved him as Doug, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. Doug was 79 years old.

Doug was born to Ann and Carl Conrad on a hot summer day, August 10, 1945. He attended the Fort Dodge Community Schools throughout his school career. Doug graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1963 where he met the love of his life Mary Johnson. On August 14, 1965, they were married and made their home in Fort Dodge. Doug was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Vietnam. Upon his return to the states, he became a pressman at the Fort Dodge Messenger and later at Joslin Press. Doug and Mary would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this coming summer. They have two children, a daughter, Branwyn (Joel) Greathouse and a son, Devin (Savanna) Conrad. They were his greatest joy and then came the added blessing of his grandchildren, Conrad Greathouse, Caleb Conrad, Graham Conrad and Fiona Conrad. He is survived also by his sister, Nancy (Dean) Bundy, brother, Jeff (Jill) Conrad in Fort Dodge and a sister, Jayne (Keith) Pronske in Kansas along with their children.

Doug was a servant leader who was actively involved in Golden Kiwanis Club chairing the peanuts fundraiser every year and serving in the role of Vice President and President, Fort Dodge Community School Foundation where he chaired the miles of pennies campaign for years, American Cancer Society member, President of the Printer’s Association at the Fort Dodge Messenger, coached numerous traveling basketball teams and Teener baseball teams. Some of his fondest memories were those spent around dinner tables with family and friends through the years where he would listen intently, share stories and crack some of the funniest one liners around. He was an avid golfer and loved to hang out with his golfing buddies. He loved to attend events of his children and grandchildren encouraging while supporting loudly on the sidelines. He had a love of a good cherry pie, especially his mother-in-law Margaret's version, or his mother’s cinnamon rolls and any dog that ever graced his presence. He owned many dogs throughout his lifetime and we are sure he was greeted with wagging tails and wet kisses.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, Ann and Carl Conrad; in-laws Frank and Margaret Johnson, brother Nick Conrad and niece, Noelle Conrad.

A private gathering is being held at a later date. Doug’s wishes were to be cremated and any memorials be left to the Patterson Teener League where Doug, his son and grandsons played baseball every summer.
