Fort Dodge company provides special set of wheels for local girl
Decker Truck Line Inc. funds adaptive bike
A special bike is enabling a Fort Dodge girl to get out and ride just like her brothers and all the other kids in her neighborhood.
Aubreigh Ballard’s new set of wheels looks different from the other bikes spotted around Fort Dodge. But she now gets to go out and about, something that wasn’t possible just a month ago.
Ballard, who is 10, was born missing the middle piece of her brain. One of the consequences of that is that she can’t manage a traditional bicycle. But she has always wanted to get out and ride with all the other kids.
A happy coincidence that seems like it came straight out of a feel-good cable TV movie made that possible for her.
Her mother, Emily Dencklau, filed an application with Variety -The Children’s Charity of Iowa, seeking an adaptive bicycle.
That same day, across town, Dale Decker, chief executive officer of Decker Truck Line Inc., informed Variety that his company would change the way it supports the charity. Instead of making a general donation, Decker Truck Line would support Variety’s mobility program and fund an adaptive bike for a child.
The end result: the Fort Dodge company funded the adaptive bike for the Fort Dodge girl.
Ballard received her new bike Oct. 29 at the trucking company’s local headquarters.
Decker Truck Line Inc. has an impressive record of supporting good things in our community. In this case, its support of a larger statewide charity resulted in a wonderful benefit for a local girl.
We commend Dale Decker and the entire team at Decker Truck Line Inc. not only for the gift of wheels for Aubreigh Ballard, but their steadfast support of our community.
With winter weather now closing in, Ballard will have to park her new bike for the season. But we’re betting she’ll be back on the road next spring, and enjoying every minute of it thanks to Decker Truck Line Inc. and Variety.
