This year marks AFES’s fifth anniversary of continuing the “Operation Christmas” tradition, now known as AFES Community Christmas. Since taking over this beloved program, we’ve made some changes to better serve our community, yet our mission remains the same: bringing joy and essential support to families in need.

AFES Community Christmas is more than just a toy giveaway; it’s about meeting real needs. We provide each child with at least three toys, one new outfit, and essential hygiene items. Families who apply and qualify will receive necessities like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, body wash, shampoo, and other household essentials. Additionally, we include food items to help make the season a bit easier.

This year, signup will be on Nov. 25, 26, and 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the AFES center, located at 712 Third St. N.W. We ask that applicants bring a photo ID. The actual distribution of gifts and essentials will take place on Dec. 15.

With winter predicted to be especially challenging due to rising food and heating costs, the need is greater than ever. We are currently accepting donations — both monetary and in-kind — to support the hundreds of children and families we serve. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.
