Committee work is increasing in the Iowa Senate
We are getting notices for more and more subcommittee meetings as we work on bills and proposals coming through our committees.
Some of the topics worked on this week include the hands-fee bill discussed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, judicial issues and reforming county supervisor districts. While we work through the bills that come across our desks, please feel free to reach out if you have questions about legislation, concerns or any other issues that may be affecting you.
This week a Senate subcommittee passed Senate Study Bill 1010, reforming the process for city employees and banning citizen review boards for law enforcement. The changes in this bill would provide a more objective disciplinary process, take politics out of the process, remove any conflicts of interest and provide more clarifications for civil service commissions to ensure a fairer process.
Senate Republicans have a record of standing up for law enforcement and ensuring that they have the tools to do their jobs successfully. We have passed laws that protect officers and the tough decisions they may have to make on duty. We held cities accountable for allowing violent rioting that damaged property and businesses. We also increased penalties for rioters who caused harm and damage to communities. The legislature has also made looting a crime in Iowa and raised penalties for fake reports to law enforcement.
Senate Study Bill 1010 is one more way we can keep our commitment to supporting law enforcement and ensure a fairer process for disciplinary actions.
Joining us on Wednesday was the Future Farmers of America as we celebrated FFA Day on the Hill.
I was happy to welcome groups from Southeast Valley High School with advisor Johanna Kunert, East Sac Community School with Amber Hoefling, and Fort Dodge Senior High School with advisor Ben Hennessy.
This day is a time for these young men and women from across Iowa to visit the state Capitol to visit with their legislators, learn about state government and discuss issues affecting education and agriculture. These students are the great future leaders here in the state of Iowa and they do an incredible job of representing the importance and strength of Iowa’s agriculture industry.
State Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, represents Calhoun, Pocahontas, Sac and Webster counties.
