Geisler delivers for Southeast Warren, 3-2
An RBI-double by Natalie Geisler broke a tie and sent Southeast Warren into the Class 1A state softball semifinals with a thrilling 3-2 victory in eight innings over Wayne here Tuesday night.
The Warhawks (24-2 overall) will now play Sigourney Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. on Iowa Central Field for a spot in the 1A championship round.
Geisler, one of three seniors on the roster for head coach Cody Reynolds, and Southeast Warren have now qualified each of the past four seasons for state. Last year, they failed to win a game after placing second in 2022.
Much like their regional final, walk-off win over Clarksville, this one was filled with plenty of dramatics.
“I honestly don’t remember much from that game (against Clarksville),” Geisler said. “But I will definitely remember this one.”
Geisler finished 2-for-4 with two doubles while Belle Ewing also had a pair of hits. Kate Logue drove in a run for the Warhawks.
The win also avenged a 4-1 Pride of Iowa Conference defeat for the Warhawks at the hands of Wayne, as their other loss came to fellow semifinalist Martensdale-St. Marys, 5-3.
“It feels great to knock off a conference opponent,” Kaylyn Holmes said. “It definitely means a little more.”
Izzie Moore struck out 12 to lead the Falcons, who return eight starters from last year when they qualified for state.
Both Skylar O’Brien and Allie Jo Fortune had solo home runs.
Wayne (24-5) will now play Remsen St. Mary’s (23-1) in a Class 1A consolation game Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on Yankee Field.
