Savages advance to 1A semifinals
Carly Goodwin doesn’t need much run support.
On Tuesday night with a spot in the Class 1A state softball semifinals on the line, the future University of Northern Iowa Panther helped her own cause at the plate.
Goodwin, the reigning Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year, drove in the first run of the game as Sigourney knocked off previously unbeaten Remsen St. Mary’s at Rogers Park, 3-1. With the win, the Savages (24-7 overall) advance to play Southeast Warren on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. on Iowa Central Field.
Making their third appearance at state in four years, Sigourney relied heavily on Goodwin, just as they have all year. The senior improved to 21-2 on the year, striking out 13. She had a no-hitter into the seventh and did not walk a batter.
“We knew (Remsen St. Mary’s) was a good team being undefeated,” Goodwin said. “My catcher and I put together a checklist in the dorms on each hitter and we used that all game long. I think it really helped because it allowed us to attack each hitter and not shy away from anyone.”
Erin Dawson plated a pair of runs in the sixth after Goodwin’s RBI that scored Ava Fisch. Fisch had a triple while Carmalita Cave scored and stole a base.
“I am just so proud of everybody,” Goodwin said. “This means a lot to all of us.”
Marina Cronin matched her pitch-for-pitch through the first five-plus innings after entering the night having allowed just 12 earned runs over 93 innings. Carminde Ricke had an RBI for the Hawks, who now face Wayne on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on Yankee Field in a consolation game.
