Sigourney in finals for first time
The Sigourney softball team is headed to the Class 1A state championship game for the first time in program history.
Behind senior standout Carly Goodwin, the Savages topped Southeast Warren here Wednesday night at Rogers Park, 6-1. Sigourney (25-7 overall) will meet Martensdale-St. Marys on Friday at 7:30 p.m. for the crown on Channel Seeds Field.
Goodwin, a future University of Northern Iowa Panther, has helped the Savages reach state three of the past four seasons. She took a no-hitter into the seventh in the quarterfinals and finished with nine strikeouts in the semis.
“This feels amazing,” said Erin Dawson, one of five seniors on the Sigourney roster. “We’ve tried twice before so I guess the third time is the charm.
“We always stay up and confident in what we can do, and we believe in each other.”
Both Goodwin and Dawson had two hits each while Iowa Central commit Josephine Moore hit a three-run homer. Dawson also had two RBI and Ella Burns one.
Southeast Warren (24-3), making its fourth straight state trip, will play St. Edmond on Friday at 6 p.m. on Iowa Central Field for third place. The Warhawks and Gaels tied for seventh last summer after losing both of their games.
Jaycee Neer, the daughter of former UFC fighter Josh Neer, had a hit and drove in the lone run for SE Warren.
