There is a different feel around the Van Meter softball team this summer.

After placing second last year in Class 2A, the top-ranked Bulldogs pushed their current win streak to 38 straight with a convincing 10-0 victory in six innings over West Fork here Tuesday at Rogers Park.

Van Meter (41-1 overall) now heads to the state semifinals where they will face East Marshall on Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Iowa Central Field. Last year, the Bulldogs fell to Iowa City Regina in the finals.

Since a 2-1 loss to Winterset in late May, Van Meter has not dropped a single decision, scoring 10-plus runs in 22 games. During this run, they topped 4A No. 1 North Polk, 1-0, and also downed fellow 2A qualifier West Monona, 8-1.

“We didn’t really know what was going to happen, but we were confident that we were going to win,” Van Meter junior Finley Netten said. “We went out and did our job and got it done. We wanted to show them what Van Meter is all about and we (proved to) everyone else here that we’re here to win.”

Lauren Wallace, Maddie Waldorf, Bianca Prickett and Mady Schnell all had two hits, with Schnell driving in three and Alice Ruggles two. As a team, Van Meter stole a tournament-record 14 bases, including three from Netten and two each by Prickett and Kennedy Wiedman.

The Bulldogs are also one steal from the 2A record for a single tournament, set by St. Edmond in 2015.

Waldorf was excellent inside the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out 10 and walking two. The senior is headed to Grand View University in the fall.

West Fork will play Lisbon on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. on Dodger Field in a consolation contest.
