Area football squads finding their rhythm

Both South Central Calhoun and Pocahontas Area put on an offensive display in Week 1.

Now, the two squads will face off at Lake City in a showcase of high-powered attacks.

Messenger-area teams got a feel for their new squads last Friday, and tried to work through the kinks to smooth things out. Area teams went 10-6 combined last week.

The ninth-ranked Titans earned a 48-7 victory over East Sac County, while the Indians shut out Manson Northwest Webster, 38-0.

As impressive as the Titans were with 452 yards of total offense, it was the defense that allowed only 110 yards to the Raiders.

Junior quarterback Gavin Batta, who threw for 930 yards last season, tossed a third of that last Friday in a 308-yard, four-touchdown effort. He was an efficient 13-for-21 passing, while also running for a score.

Four different receivers caught TD passes, with junior Keegan Soard leading the way at five catches for 158 yards and two scores. He averaged 31.6 yards per catch.

Junior Brock Nattress had two grabs for 85 yards and a 59-yard touchdown. Senior Justin Hanks had a 15-yard score.

Senior Chance Roeder and classmate Jordan Moreno had one completion and one catch combined, respectively, but it was for a 65-yard touchdown from Roeder.

What the Titans did through the air, the Indians churned out on the ground. Pocahontas Area rushed for 329 yards, led by two 100-yard backs.

Senior Alex Welander was the groundhog with 23 carries for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Lucas Kopriva had 131 yards, while junior Ryan Sommerlot had 10 carries for 77 yards and two TDs.

The Pocahontas Area defense held the Cougars to 76 yards of total offense.

Emmetsburg (0-1) at No. 7 Southeast Valley (1-0)

Class 2A defending state champion Southeast Valley won its sixth straight contest dating back to last season, defeating Interstate 35 Truro by a 20-7 final.

The seventh-ranked Jaguars ran for 134 yards, led by Brady Hanson. The sophomore ran for 75 yards and two TDs. Senior Carl Berglund ran for 33 yards and a scores.

Senior Justin Loseke led the defense with 10 tackles. Loseke now has 206 career tackles and trails only University Iowa defensive lineman Aaron Graves (221) on the career charts.

The E-Hawks had 317 yards of offense in a 39-27 loss to Algona last week. Senior Cade Shirk ran for 108 yards, and classmate Ryan Brennan had 94 yards on the ground. Sophomore Carson Baak added two touchdowns.

Brennan threw for 87 yards and two scores. He connected with Shirk for 35 yards, while senior Ben Saxton had a receiving TD as well.

No. 3 Humboldt (1-0) at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (0-1)

A year after reaching the Class 3A state semifinals, Humboldt finds itself ranked third in 3A and coming off an impressive 10-0 victory over Webster City on Friday night.

There were no offensive touchdowns in that contest — only a 52-yard interception to paydirt from senior Kaleb McCullough late and a 27-yard field goal from senior Trever Beach.

Senior quarterback Joshua Thurm was 11-for-19 passing for 129 yards. Junior Lance Coon led the offense with 48 yards.

The Cardinals suffered a 32-8 loss to West Hancock in their opener. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura rushed for 71 yards and threw for 15. The lone touchdown came from senior A.J. Tusha.

Clear Lake (1-0) at Algona (1-0)

Algona put up solid offensive numbers in a 39-27 victory over Emmetsburg.

The Bulldogs had 449 yards of total offense and were balanced, with 269 on the ground and 180 through the air.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Manske threw for 180 yards on 11-for-14 passing and four touchdowns. He connected with senior Caden Weber (six yards), junior Jayden Erpelding (17) and junior Porter Reffer (63) for scores.

Manske also ran for 104 yards and a 46-yard touchdown on 10 carries.

Refer had 60 yards on the ground and a 36-yard touchdown and senior Lamorn Ulfers had a one-yard score.

Clear Lake pitched a 42-0 shutout over Iowa Falls-Alden in Week 1. Sophomore Titan Schmitt had 119 yards on 25 totes and five touchdowns.

Junior Cael Stephany was 16-for-17 for 186 yards and a nine-yard touchdown pass to senior Ezekiel Nelson. Nelson caught five balls for 50 yards.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (1-0) at Belmond-Klemme (0-1)

The Cowboys started their season off with a 48-20 win over Eagle Grove.

Senior Preston Gardner had a career night, rushing for 257 yards and two touchdowns with a long score of 76 yards on 15 carries.

Classmate Nevan Foss had 106 yards on seven totes and two touchdowns, a long of 45 yards.

Junior Diego Gonzalez (30 yards) and senior Cale Kirstein (eight) also had touchdowns.

Belmond-Klemme suffered a 36-8 loss to AGWSR last Friday.
