Humboldt shares No. 1 spot in 3A

Photo by Rick Thompson: Will Orness of Humboldt scrambles against Gilbert last Friday night.

Only one slight change took place among the seven prep football classes in the latest rankings, as Humboldt is a co-No. 1 in Class 3A once again.

The Wildcats, who remained unbeaten with a convincing win on Senior Night over Gilbert last Friday, share the top spot with two weeks left in the regular season. Harlan (6-1) joins Humboldt at the top.

Last year, the Cyclones knocked the Wildcats off in the state semifinals. Harlan, which received six of the 10 first place votes from members of the media, topped then-No. 3 ADM-Adel last Friday, 42-7.

The Wildcats (7-0 overall, 3-0 in district) picked up three first place votes and ADM received the other. Humboldt will have its own opportunity to topple a Top-10 team this week, as they travel to No. 6 Nevada on Friday.

Earlier this year, Derrick Elman’s bunch handled ninth-ranked North Polk, and they also hold a win over Webster City, which received a vote in 4A.

Humboldt concludes its regular season with Algona next week, who has been in-and-out of the 3A Top-10.

Will Orness, Lance Coon and Trever Beach anchor the Humboldt offense. Orness, an all-stater last year, has almost 800 yards of total offense with seven TDs, Lance Coon has 901 yards rushing and 12 scores, and Beach has 14 receptions for 232 with two TDs, along with being a threat in the kicking game.

Nevada (6-1, 3-0) enters the game having picked up recent wins over Algona, Ballard and Gilbert. Senior Noah Mills is the offensive leader, racking up almost 1,100 yards in the air with 10 touchdowns, while also running for 567 yards and seven more TDs.

Last year, Humboldt scored a 19-15 victory over Nevada at home.

Greene County (6-1, 4-0) remains sixth in 2A, while Newell-Fonda held firm at No. 9 in eight-player. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (5-2, 2-2) is receiving votes in 2A.

The Rams, who have already clinched their district, host Clarke, while the Cowboys head to OABCIG.

The other No. 1 programs all remained the same: Pleasant Valley (5A), Council Bluffs Lewis Central (4A), Williamsburg (2A), West Branch (1A), West Hancock (A) and Remsen St. Mary’s (eight-player).

For all but Class 5A, 4A and 3A, this will week will mark the regular-season finale. Larger classes have one more week of games left, while the rest enter into the postseason next Friday night.
