FD’s Ross qualifies for Worlds
Dodger freshman champion secures Greco team spot in Las Vegas, with freestyle competition still to come
LAS VEGAS — Dreshaun Ross passed his first test in what he considered to be a warm-up act of sorts.
The main event is still to come.
Fort Dodge’s gifted freshman wrestler earned a spot in the Cadet World Championships here on Thursday at the U.S. Open, securing Greco gold at 92 kilograms (202.8 pounds) in the team trials with five dominant victories by technical fall.
The 15-year-old Ross was never seriously challenged in the U17 bracket, out-scoring his opponents by a combined total of 50-2. He overwhelmed Aiden Cooley of Texas in a best-of-three finals by identical 9-0 scores.
“I feel I performed very well throughout most of my matches,” said Ross, the nation’s 12th-ranked 195-pounder according to FloWrestling. “I had to make a few mid-match adjustments, but in the end, it all worked out.”
Ross arrived in Las Vegas with a goal of qualifying for worlds on both the Greco and freestyle levels. With one box checked, the 2023 Iowa state champion now turns his attention to Saturday.
“I’m excited, obviously, and happy for the moment,” Ross said. “I don’t want to say Greco was for fun, but I don’t take it as serious as freestyle.
“The ultimate goal (a freestyle crown) isn’t accomplished yet, and won’t be until the weekend is over.”
The U17 World Championships for both Greco and freestyle are July 31-August 6 in Istanbul, Turkey.
“I love the opportunity to represent my country overseas,” Ross said. “It’s always special to experience something like that.”
Earlier this month, Ross captured a folkstyle national title — the fifth of his career, but first at the high-school level. He was 44-2 as a freshman for the Dodgers, becoming the first large-class freshman in state history to take gold at a weight class higher than 170 pounds.
Ross is a six-time AAU state champ, a six-time Tulsa Nationals title holder, a Fargo Nationals winner and a Greco-Roman and freestyle U-15 Pan-Am victor. Ross is also a five-time Trinity Award honoree — a prestigious honor given when a competitor sweeps the Kickoff Classic, Tulsa Nationals and Reno World Championships.
Ross’s brother, Damarion, took eighth place to earn All-American status at 80kg (176.4 pounds) in the U17 competition here on Thursday. Damarion Ross is a senior-to-be at FDSH, was a state silver medalist in February.
