Tritons are ICCAC champions
Iowa Central baseball is back on top top
The seventh-ranked Iowa Central baseball team put the finishing touches on “Championship Sunday” here at Rogers Park.
With a sweep of Ellsworth, the Tritons laid claim to both the regular season ICCAC title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region XI Championships that goes with it.
Iowa Central (44-9 overall, 25-8 in league) picked up victories by scores of 7-5 and 10-1 to extend its current win streak to seven in a row and finish the year 24-4 at home.
“I think this definitely shows the importance of having depth and the quality of depth we have with this team this year,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “These guys do a tremendous job of picking each other up anytime someone is down or struggling. They are there for one another and really want to make the team better.
“When we started out, this was one of our goals, so to accomplish it feels great. But we definitely have more work left to do.”
The opener of the doubleheader saw Michael Siemer, Caleb Corbin and Jackson Tessman all connect on home runs, as Tyler Parizek struck out five for the win on the mound. Corbin drove in three with Evan Borst going 3-for-4 with a double.
Borst connected for his own homer in game two, with Quade Peters, Siemer, Joshua Blount and Zakary Goodwin each recording two hits. Borst drove in two and former Webster City standout Devon Stoakes had a hit.
Tyler Olson got the start, striking out two over two innings, while Kole Bradley recorded three strikeouts. Eight Triton pitched combined to record 11 strikeouts with just five hits allowed.
In Saturday’s 14-4 win at Ellsworth, the Tritons hit five home runs to provide Reese Schlecht all the support he would need. Schlecht struck out six over six-plus innings, allowing just one earned run with one walk.
Peters, Borst, Blount and Colten Becker all went yard, with Peters going 4-for-7 with four RBI. Borst and Blount each drove in three. Tessman also had three hits in the win.
“I believe this is the first time that a Div. II school has won the regular season title since they combined with Div. I,” Stein said. “That really is a tremendous accomplishment for this group to have on their resumes.”
The Region XI Tournament begins Thursday in Burlington at Community Field. The double-elimination bracket will conclude Sunday, with the regional winner advancing to be the host of the North Plains District Tournament May 19-20.
As the top seed, the Tritons will begin play Friday at 2 p.m. vs the winner of the No. 4/No. 5 game that begins the tournament.
