A nice start for the St. Edmond baseball team was quickly erased here Thursday night at Rogers Park.
Eagle Grove scored eight runs in the second on its way to claiming a 13-3 victory in five innings over the Gaels.
Jake Jeske twirled a two-hitter, striking out six with no walks to lead Eagle Grove (12-7 overall). He also drew two walks, scored a run, stole a base and drove in another run.
Nolan Krauss was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, while Cayden Schultz added an RBI double.
For St. Edmond (2-11), Hayden Derrig had a triple, stole a base and scored, JT Laufersweiler scored a run and stole a base and Johnny Dickerson had two steals and a run scored.
Tyler McDowell drove in a run with Kinnick Henning settling in to pitch two innings of relief.
“I preach the little things and doing those little things to avoid extending innings against us and extending them for us,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “Right now, we just aren’t doing those.
“We had a great start and we kicked the ball around a little, walked too many batters and they put together a big inning.”
Derrig knocked a pitch off Jeske and took off in the first, landing on third. He scored on an error and Laufersweiler came around to make it 2-0 on a grounder by McDowell.
St. Edmond added a run in the fourth after Dickerson was hit by a pitch and stole both second and third before scoring.
Eagle Grove batted around in the second, though, drawing four walks and then getting three consecutive singles from the bottom part of the lineup.
“We just didn’t get out of innings like we need to do,” Szalat said. “I thought we got some nice innings out of JT on the mound, and Kinnick really came on and looked good. Maybe out of this we found a guy who can step in when we need someone and pitch in relief.”
Trenton Sorenson reached base four times, while Krauss was on three times like Jeske. Jaxon Morris scored two runs for the Eagles, who have now won two straight in the series with their old North Central Conference rival.
Eagle Grove takes on Belmond-Klemme Friday night while St. Edmond is off until Monday when they head to Webster City.
