Twin Lakes hosts Sprint, Super Sprint Triathlons
TWIN LAKES — Three teams and 65 individuals registered for this year’s 17th annual Twin Lakes Sprint Triathlon and 1st annual Twin Lakes Super Sprint Triathlon last Saturday.
The 74 registered athletes ranged in age from 11-69 and represented four states: Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, and 30 different communities from Iowa: Adel, Ames, Ankeny, Carroll, Cherokee, Collins, Council Bluffs, Creston, Dayton, Des Moines, Elgin, Fort Dodge, Gilbert, Hiawatha, Humboldt, Lake View, Lytton, Manson, Meriden, Maxwell, Muscatine, North Liberty, Norwalk, Panora, Pella, Pleasant Hill, Pocahontas, Ruthven, Urbandale, Waverly and West Des Moines.
There were 18 total participants from Fort Dodge and the surrounding communities.
Nickolas Kraus of Ames prevailed in the men’s sprint triathlon with a time of 1:00:25. Kristine Harris of Fort Dodge was the women’s sprint triathlon champion with a time of 1:08:06.
The triathlon team winners were “The Goodnight Bro” — three 17-year-olds from Pella: Steven Gaul, Jake Huston, Nathan VanderWall — with a time of 1:01:33. Overall male winner of the super sprint was Daniel Nordquist of Panora (43:11), while the female champion was 11-year-old Ava Kakacek of Pocahontas (49:23).
Every year, 60-plus volunteers plus the staff at the Twin Lakes Bible Camp help at this event.
“I had such a blast, amazing people, wonderful volunteers and such a positive atmosphere,” said Megan Copeland of Pella. “My 16-year-old son had a wonderful experience for his first Triathlon.
“Thank you for the volunteers who take the time and do so with a smile, we were grateful.”
The sponsors’ collective financial commitment helps offset fixed costs of putting on the events — chip timing, swim caps, race towels, medals, awards, food — plus it maximizes the charitable component and raises more money for the Twin Lakes Bible Camp.
Chris Carr is the Twin Lakes Triathlon event founder.
