Pressure is on area athletes Thursday

State track and field bids will be handed out Thursday around Iowa.

Fort Dodge heads to Norwalk for Class 4A action, while St. Edmond will be in Earlham for 1A.

Meet times are set for 4 p.m. with field events and 4:45 p.m. for running.

The Dodgers will compete alongside Ames, Des Moines Lincoln, West Des Moines Dowling, Mason City, Norwalk, Ottumwa and Waukee. The first and second place finishers in each event plus the next 12 best performances from all the qualifying sites will advance to state.

Joining the Gaels in Earlham will be ACGC, Ankeny Christian, Audubon, Collins-Maxwell, Earlham, Glidden-Ralston, Grand View Christian, Melcher-Dallas, Orient-Macksburg, Panorama, Paton-Churdan, Twin Cedars and Woodward Academy.

The winner of each event in 1A advances to state along with the next 14 best performances.

In 3A and 2A, qualifiers will come from the first and second place finishers at each district with the next eight-best also advancing.

Algona, Humboldt and Webster City will all travel to Clear Lake for a 3A qualifying meet.

Manson Northwest Webster is a 2A host with East Sac County and South Central Calhoun among those also in the field. Eagle Grove and Southeast Valley head to the Roland-Story with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows at Dike-New Hartford.

North Union will host a 1A qualifier with Bishop Garrigan, Newell-Fonda and West Bend-Mallard joining them.

The state track and field championships are May 16-18 in Des Moines from Drake Stadium.
