Messengerland boys have high hopes for state week
DES MOINES — Last year at Drake Stadium, Matt Condon was able to take it all in while competing in three events.
Now, the Manson Northwest Webster junior is primed to secure state gold around the blue oval this week.
Condon qualified in Class 2A in three events for the Cougars, just like he did last spring. He comes into the meet with the second-best high jump mark out of districts, the fourth-best long jump leap and the ninth-best time in the 400 hurdles.
During the regular season, Condon ranked in the Top-12 in all three events, inclduing clearing 6-foot-6 in the high jump, which tied him for fourth best.
His experience last year should help, as he was 10th in the high jump, 19th in the long jump and 20th in the 400 hurdles.
Condon is one of just a handful of area athletes seeking state medals to end their seasons, with several ranked in the Top-10 after districts.
Evan Allie of Algona is seventh in the 200 in 3A while also running on the sixth-fastest sprint medley and seventh-fastest distance medley. William Weichert, Iowa State University football commit Jack Limbaugh and Ashton Moreno complete the sprint medley, with Weichert, Levi Walker and Gavin Weber rounding out the distance medley.
Weber is also qualified as an individual for the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 during the meet.
Humboldt’s distance medley relay of Keegan Groat, Elliot Carlson, Jackson Dodd and Mason Van Pelt has been competing with Algona all spring, as they clocked the eighth-best district time. During the season, they had the seventh-fastest time, one spot ahead of the Bulldogs.
Southeast Valley’s Jace Hanson positioned himself with the 10th-quickest time in the 2A 400 hurdles, while Emmetsburg’s Cameron Madden and Byron Maina are in the Top-10 of the 110 hurdles and high jump.
Maina earned fourth at state as a sophomore last season.
