Algona too much for St. Edmond

ALGONA — A six-run first inning fueled the Algona baseball team in a 16-1 victory over St. Edmond here Monday night.

Dawson Elsbecker drove in three runs. University of Iowa recruit Tate Slagle added two hits and two RBI.

Aiden Ulrich earned the win on the mound, striking out six while allowing just two hits with two walks. He also scored twice and stole two bases.

Mason Ulrich, Logan Lentz and Reid Louwagie both scored twice, as Mason Ulrich added two RBI for the Bulldogs (7-4 overall, 3-0 in the NCC).

For the Gaels (4-2, 1-2), Hayden Derrig drove in Jack McElroy. Derrig and Grant Galles each recorded a hit.

“(Pitching) walks were our bugabo,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “We made some phenomenal defensive plays, despite the number of errors. We made some good defensive decisions on situations we haven’t been in before.

“We’re going to keep getting better. We need to continue to improve at the plate as well.”

St. Edmond returns to the diamond Wednesday, hosting Hampton-Dumont/CAL at Rogers Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
