The St. Edmond baseball team took advantage of 14 walks, swiping 12 bases to post a 13-4 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden here Friday night at Rogers Park.

Hayden Derrig reached base four times, stealing four bases with two RBI and two runs while Jack McElroy earned the win in his first varsity start on the mound.

Derrig got the ball rolling in the opening inning, walking before stealing both second and third. He scored on an error as fellow senior JT Laufersweiler followed with a walk and two steals before scoring when Max Webster was walked with the bases loaded.

By the time the first was over, the Gaels (4-1 overall, 1-1 in North Central Conference) had a 6-0 lead. McElroy would pitch five-plus, striking out five with six hits allowed.

“We were patient at the plate,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “Last Wednesday, we found out how tough it can be when you walk batters. It was good to see us keep our focus and adjust as the game went on.

“Jack did a nice job of that, too. He was able to pitch out of some jams and our defense played strong behind him.”

Laufersweiler came on in the sixth and recorded the final six outs, striking out a pair without allowing a hit.

No. 9 hitter Kade Schlegel had two hits and drove in two, McElroy had three walks and Webster finished with two RBI while reaching base three times.

All nine batters for St. Edmond got on base as they pushed their season walk total to 38 with 18 hit batters.

“We’ve got to continue working on our hitting, but at least we are finding ways to get on base,” Szalat said. “Hayden continues to set the table from the leadoff spot and we are finding ways to score by running the bases well.”

Saturday’s CYO Tournament has been called off due to rain meaning the Gaels return to the diamond Monday at Algona.
