CLUTCH EFFORT
Kinnick Henning delivered a game-winning two-run single in the sixth to lift the St. Edmond baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Hampton-Dumont/CAL here Wednesday night at Rogers Park.
Henning connected on a 1-1 pitch that went just over the outstretched glove of second baseman Blaek Burkmester, scoring Grant Galles and Koleman Hanson. Two batters prior, Galles plated JT Laufersweiler to tie it at 2-all.
Hayden Derrig picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing five hits, two walks and no earned runs. Laufersweiler came on to record the final two outs, getting out of a bases loaded jam.
“Kinnick came up big,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “He saves us runs with his defense and he got it done at the plate. And Hayden and JT, that is what you want out of your seniors.
“I know it’s coach-speak, but they are seniors making senior plays.”
Derrig and Laufersweiler recorded a combined three hits, scored two runs, stole three bases and drove in one from the top of the order. Derrig singled in the first, stole second, reached third on an error and scored with Laufersweiler connected on a 2-2 pitch.
This was the first win for the Gaels (5-2 overall, 2-2 in North Central Conference) over the Bulldogs (2-10, 1-3) since 2019. Last year in a 7-0 loss at Hampton, Jaxon Moats struck out 15.
Moats had just three strikeouts this time around, as St. Edmond racked up eight hits on the night.
“We haven’t had a really strong year to date at the plate,” Szalat said. “But I thought we came up big (Wednesday) against a pitcher who dominated us last year. We took good cuts and were aggressive.”
Derrig worked out of situations in the second, fourth and fifth innings, as the Bulldog stranded eight runners in all including six in scoring positions.
Henning came up clutch in the fourth, gunning down the go-ahead run at the time with a perfect throw from center to Jack McElroy, who made the tag at home plate.
Having hit the 110-pitch limit in the seventh, Laufersweiler came on, allowing a hit before getting the second out. An intentional walk loaded the bases but a deep fly to center ended it.
St. Edmond returns to action Friday when they travel to Humboldt.
