Dodger baseball squad splits in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY — The Fort Dodge baseball team secured a split here Monday in a makeup with Sioux City East and Sioux City West.

After falling to 10th-ranked (Class 4A) East, 4-0, the Dodgers jumped all over West, posting an 11-3 victory.

In the win, Fort Dodge (5-5 overall) scored five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth as junior Jase Nekvinda pitched five innings to earn the victory on the mound.

Nekvinda struck out four and allowed just five hits. Will McElroy recorded the final six outs with two strikeouts, no walks and no hits allowed.

Jace Johnson had a double, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Rylan Kingrey had two runs and two RBI, Tanner Peterson was 2-for-4 with two runs, and both Tru McBride and Jaxson Dencklau each scored twice with a hit and two walks.

Peterson and Kolton Schiltz, who had a hit and two walks, both stole a base.

Dencklau, McBride, Karch Smith, Johnson and Schiltz each had a hit off Sioux City East’s Frankie Stoos, as the freshman struck out 10 to earn the win. Schiltz added a stolen base and reached when he was hit by a pitch while Johnson worked the lone walk off Stoos.

For the Dodgers, McBride pitched four innings, striking out two while Dencklau tossed two innings and also recorded a pair of strikeouts.

Fort Dodge heads to Legion Memorial Field on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Ottumwa beginning at 5 p.m.
