Flaherty, Rodriguez play state tennis
MARSHALLTOWN — Fort Dodge’s Manuela Rodriguez and Micah Flaherty reached the Round of 16 state co-ed tennis on Tuesday.
The pair of Dodger No. 1s, won their first match after a bye and lost their second match in the Round of 16.
Rodriguez and Flaherty beat a team from Linn-Mar after rallying. The Dodgers lost the first set 6-3. They bounced back with wins of 6-4 and 10-7.
“Manuela and Micah have practiced and worked together before,” said the duos head coach Julie Astor. “They played well together. They hit the ball hard and see the court well.”
In their next match they lost the opener 7-5. They took the second 6-4 and fell in the third, 10-7.
“Ryan Flaherty was coaching as well and helped a lot, giving them some good pointers,” Astor said. “It was great to see them play together and play well.”
State co-ed tennis is a non-qualifying event, teams can sign up and this year’s tournament was one of the biggest in recent times with 52 teams.
“It was a good tournament,” Astor said. “This is a tough tournament. This is where teams want to continue to play and get better.”
