No. 6 Gaels roll past IF-A
Led by player of the year Cooper Nicholson, six members of the Iowa Central baseball team were honored by the ICCAC recently.
Nicholson, Harrison Bowman, Ian Culver, Will Smoot, Troy Berg and Jack Mausser were selected to the all-region first team for the Tritons. Josh Kirchhoff was on the second team while Peter Johnson and Ryan Ohm made honorable mention.
Iowa Central finished 46-13 overall and was ranked in the Top-5 for most of the season.
Nicholson, a freshman, was tied for second in the country with 20 home runs while also ranking in the Top-5 in runs and total bases. In conference play, he had 14 homers among his 46 hits with a .798 slugging percentage.
On the year, Nicholson batted .357 with 46 runs scored and 42 RBI.
Smoot hit .368 with a league-leading 49 RBI in 33 conference games. He also recorded nine home runs to go along with a .481 on-base and a .764 slugging.
Berg led the ICCAC in triples with six and had the league’s highest on-base percentage at .544 while ranking fourth with 18 steals.
Bowman had a nation-leading 94 RBI with 17 homers, which ranked fifth in the NJCAA. Mausser recorded a team-leading .417 batting average and was also first for the Tritons with a slugging percentage of .821 to go along with nine homers and seven doubles in 26 league games.
Culver, who is headed to the University of Utah, went 5-1 on the mound and averaged 11.25 strikeouts per nine innings.
Bowman and Nicholson were named second team All-Americans by The National Scouting Bureau.
Chance Key from Des Moines Area was the pitcher of the year, Cole Smith of Southeastern the defensive player of the year and Justin Schulte of Southeastern earned coach of the year.
