POWER SURGE
No. 3 FDSH moves to 9-1 with rout
Fresh off an extended weekend in West Des Moines, the third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team made quick work out of Sioux City West here Monday night at Rogers Park.
Senior Mackenzie McIlrath hit a two-run homer in the first, eighth-grader Aubrey Alstott had two doubles and drove in two, and junior Lucy Porter fired a two-hitter as the Dodgers won in three innings, 12-0.
“We really hit the ball hard and were aggressive on the bases,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “That’s what we wanted to do from the start. When we put pressure on the opposing team, good things happen.”
Fort Dodge (9-1 overall) pounded out eight runs on six hits in the opening inning, highlighted by the homer from McIlrath, who graduated this past Saturday night. She cleared the fence in center on the first pitch she saw.
Porter, senior Macy Brown and Alstott had back-to-back-to-back doubles later in the inning, with Hope Alstott and Calliegh Zimmermann each adding singles. Meah McCaleb walked and scored, while Ashlyn Wills drove in a run from the No. 9 spot in the order.
“From Hope down to Ashlyn, we attacked at the plate,” Adams said. “And Lucy just continued her excellent play from this past weekend. She was a really tough in wins over Dallas Center-Grimes and Urbandale.
“Lucy has found that confidence and zone inside the circle.”
Alstott added a two-run double in the second inning, and Fort Dodge would put the finishing touches on the game when Ava Wessels scored on a passed ball.
Sioux City West (4-9) got a hit in the second and a triple in the third in its first meeting with the Dodgers since 2012.
Next up for Fort Dodge will be a trip to ninth-ranked (5A) Southeast Polk on Tuesday before returning home to face Marshalltown Thursday. The Dodgers close out the week at No. 3 (5A) Waukee Northwest Friday.
