Dodger softball team plays for lucky No. 7
Fort Dodge will try to extend state streak at Rogers Park
The sixth-ranked Fort Dodge softball team looks to secure another trip to the state here Tuesday night in a Class 4A regional final.
The Dodgers host No. 14 Sergeant Bluff-Luton at the home of the state tournament, Rogers Park, for the Region 1 championship and the program’s seventh straight appearance in the elite eight.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on Diamond 1.
Last Saturday night, Fort Dodge (29-12 overall) made short work of Le Mars, scoring an 11-1 victory in five innings. The Warriors (29-6) knocked off Sioux Center in the semifinals by a final of 6-0.
A five-run first got things started quickly for the Dodgers vs. Le Mars, as they added runs in the second, fourth and fifth. Junior Meah McCaleb was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two steals to raise her season average above .400, while freshman Ellie Doster drove in four.
That was more than enough run support for Lucy Porter, as the junior ace struck out five over five.
Freshman Hope Alstott and senior Macy Brown each scored two runs, with eighth-grader Aubrey Alstott adding two hits and driving in three.
On the year, Hope Alstott is hitting .438 with 49 runs, 29 steals and 25 RBI. McCaleb carries a .402 average with 52 runs, five triples and 21 driven in. Doster is batting .364 with 36 RBI, 12 doubles and two triples.
Porter owns 18 wins and has struck out 153 batters.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton enters the matchup riding a nine-game win streak. SB-L went 23-5 in the Missouri River Conference, winning the title over Class 5A schools Sioux City East and Sioux City North.
The Warriors last qualified for state in 2018, placing fourth.
Bailey Moreau had two hits and plated two runs with a double in the regional semifinals for SB-L. Brooklyn Ocker struck out five over seven innings inside the circle.
Moreau, a sophomore, is hitting .477 with 57 RBI, 48 runs, 15 doubles, 13 steals and 11 homers. Ocker has 122 strikeouts and a 1.72 earned run average.
The last time Fort Dodge and Sergeant Bluff-Luton met was in 2018, when the Dodgers claimed an 11-1 victory. Fort Dodge also won head-to-head games in 2016 (4-0) and 2014 (10-0).
The Dodgers have advanced to state every summer since 2018, placing second in 2020, winning the 5A crown in 2021, finishing as a runner-up in 2022 and taking fourth last year. Fort Dodge has 19 state appearances overall, including 14 under Adams’ direction.
