Ex-Triton standout Sears picked by Braves
Brett Sears was selected in the seventh round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
Sears, a native of Westphalia, Iowa, played for Iowa Central after a standout prep career for Harlan. He was the 221st pick overall by the Braves.
The right-handed pitcher spent the past two seasons at Nebraska after starting his college career at Western Illinois.
For the Tritons in 2022, Sears went 11-3 with six complete games and 114 strikeouts in just over 85 innings pitched, earning All-American status.
This past spring, Sears was named an NCAA Div. I All-American after going 9-1 with a 2.6 earned run average and 101 strikeouts for the Huskers, as he was also tabbed the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
During the season, Sears was named a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and National Pitcher of the Year, picking up first team all-region and District 6 Player of the Year honors.
He also became just the 19th player in program history to be named an Academic All-American and the first since 2003 to earn both All-American honors in the same season.
