Tritons cruise in opener
DETROIT, Mich. — Jesse Montalto took his Iowa Central football team to Michigan with a lot of questions to answer.
The Tritons (1-0 overall) found out a lot about themselves before the day was over on Saturday, as they posted a 56-7 rout of Community Christian in their season opener.
“It was one of those games where there was a lot we didn’t know coming in,” Montalto said. “It was a new team and a new place. It was a lot for the kids to handle, traveling 10.5 hours to play. But we looked pretty solid.”
The Tritons got off to a rocky start, fumbling on their first possession and stalling out on a couple of drives.
It didn’t take long for the tables to turn, though, as Iowa Central scored on its next eight possessions.
Five different Triton quarterbacks played, and four threw touchdown passes.
Trevon Taylor, who is slated to be the starter, had 84 passing yards and a score. Ty Purdy had a TD strike and 98 yards, while Tyler Smith threw for two scores and Dallas Sauser added a touchdown of his own.
“It’s still a competition,” Montalto said. “In 2022, we used four quarterbacks a game. That’s our plan again as of now. It’s not about not having a guy — we just happen to have four we can rely on.”
Akili Mattox had a huge day for the Tritons, hauling in two TD passes. Purdy hit Mattox with a 90-yard touchdown strike and Mattox later caught an eight-yard pass from Sauser.
Future Memphis tight end Bryce Anderson caught three balls and contributed a pair of touchdowns.
Darrion Gilliam also caught a TD.
Ethan Schultz rushed for two scores, and Cyncir Bownes also reached the end zone.
Iowa Central had 515 yards of total offense, throwing for 315 and running for 200.
The Tritons are off this weekend and will play their home opener against Highland on Sept. 7 at Dodger Stadium.
