St. Edmond hosts top-ranked Audubon
There might not be a hotter team in all of eight-player football than St. Edmond at the moment.
Coming off back-to-back games in which they scored at least 70 points, the Gaels return home to host Audubon, who is tied for first with Bishop Garrigan in the Associated Press poll.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dodger Stadium.
“It’s a big one no question about it,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “I don’t think there is another school in the state all classes who can say they played the Top-2 teams in the first four weeks of the season.”
St. Edmond (2-1 overall, 2-0 in district) rebounded from a Week 1 loss to the Golden Bears by blasting Collins-Maxwell, 70-14. They followed that performance up with a 74-24 road win at Baxter last Friday.
The Gaels, who received votes in the poll and are 14th, have scored an eye-popping 69 points in just the first quarters of their last two games while starting the running clock in both before halftime.
Grant Galles, a junior, tied a state record by returning three kickoffs back for scores vs. Baxter. He also caught a touchdown and had an interception return for a score, as did senior Klay Baker.
Baker added two rushing touchdowns and Dominic McClain caught two TDs from Ethan Swisher as St. Edmond ran just 38 offensive plays from scrimmage.
“We have improved so much since the opening game,” Dillon said. “We had a great week of practice and are excited to get back out there and have a better performance compared to when we played Garrigan.”
Swisher, who was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 103 yards last week, has thrown for 347 yards with seven touchdowns through three games. Baker has 184 yards rushing and four scores while Galles has caught nine balls for 228 with four TDs.
The Gael defense has forced 11 turnovers on the year, including four interceptions by Jakob Koopman. Adam Walker, a returning all-stater has six tackles for loss and a team-leading 20.5 tackles.
“To score 61 points in a half and run 10 offensive plays tells you just how great your defense and special teams were,” Dillon said. “Those guys played incredible and it really was a lot of fun to watch.”
Audubon will look to attack them behind senior Aaron Olsen, who has shifted from quarterback to running back. Olsen has 226 yards rushing and 148 yards receiving with four TDs while junior Carson Wessel now guides the offense.
Wessel has completed 16 of 24 for 385 yards and six TDs, averaging 24 yards per completion. He also has rushed 60 times for 383 yards and six TDs.
Along with Olsen, Austin Christensen and Brody Weber are weapons in the passing game. Christensen has 140 yards receiving and three scores while Weber has 97 and a touchdown.
The Wheelers have dominated their last two opponents, outscoring Colo-Nesco and Exira-EHK by a combined 116-8. They are averaging just over 51 points per game on the season.
Last year, Audubon won a shootout over the Gaels, 66-48, as the two teams accounted for 50 points in the first quarter.
“There were about four plays that decided that game last season,” Dillon said. “Credit them for making them.
“It feels like it is building up to be a similar type game with two great offenses and two great defenses going at it.”
