Teams work on resumes

There’s one more week for fine tuning offensive and defensive schemes, then the chase for district championships begins.

Class 2A squads will join 1A, A and eight-man in district play, while Class 3A and 4A will begin next week.

The big matchup in the area, let alone the state, will be third-ranked (4A) North Polk (3-0) at fourth-ranked (3A) Humboldt (3-0).

The Wildcats are coming off an upset victory over three-time defending state champion Van Meter, ending their 26-game win streak.

Algona (3-0) will host Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (1-2) before district play begins.

Southeast Valley (2-1) will begin district action at home against Des Moines Christian (2-1).

One of two area matchups will be Pocahontas Area (0-3) traveling to Manson Northwest Webster (2-1).

Third-ranked (1A) Emmetsburg (3-0) will travel to East Sac County (1-2).

South Central Calhoun (2-1) will travel to unbeaten ACGC (3-0) to try and get back on track.

North Polk (3-0) at Humboldt (3-0)

Humboldt has packed its pre-district schedule with strong opponents and this week doesn’t get any easier.

The Wildcats, who have beaten Spencer, Ballard and third-ranked (2A) Van Meter, now step up a Class.

North Polk knocked off the Wildcats a year ago, ending a two-game win streak from Humboldt.

In its win over the Bulldogs, Coen Matson threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with Mason Van Pelt (37 yards), Valley Davis (37) and Chase Flaherty (eight) for touchdowns.

Cash McIntire jaunted 54 yards for a rushing touchdown. The Wildcats ran for 132 yards as a team.

On the year Matson has 689 yards passing and seven scores, with one on the ground. Keegan Groat has caught 10 balls for 367 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 36.7 yards per catch.

The Comets are coming off a 41-8 win over Webster City. Quarterback Nathan Feldmann threw for 106 yards and two scores. He connected with Jake Hout (32 yards) and Coen Spurgeon (14).

BJ Tate ran for 109 yards on 17 carries and two scores with a long of 25.

North Polk’s defense came up big, returning two fumbles for scores. Brady Reinhart ran 40 yards and Gabe Vilsand scampered 20 yards to paydirt.

On the year Feldmann and Tate have been a two-man show. Feldmann has rushed for 340 and 490 yards respectively. Both have seven rushing touchdowns.

In their prerequisite before district play, Class 3A, District 2 boasts a combined 16-2 record.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (1-2) at Algona (3-0)

With a 34-12 win over Estherville-Lincoln Central a week ago, Algona has earned itself the top billing in Class 3A.

The Bulldogs have also defeated Forest City (61-36) and Spirit Lake (42-40).

Iowa State recruit Alex Manske threw for 274 yards and touchdowns. He connected with Evan Allie (85 yards) and Tate Slagle (28). Allie caught eight balls for 171 yards.

William Weichert ran for two touchdowns and Manske added a one-yard plunge.

Manske has thrown for 751 yards and seven touchdowns and has run for six scores. Weichert has four rushing touchdowns.

Allie has 14 grabs for 361 yards and three scores and Slagle has three touchdowns.

The Nighthawks are coming off a 35-2 loss to LeMars.

Quarterback Carter Kleinwolterink has thrown for 259 yards and one score. Levi Schafer has 285 on the ground and two touchdowns.

Des Moines Christian (2-1, 0-0) at Southeast Valley (2-1, 0-0)

The Jaguars pulled out their second straight victory a week ago, knocking off Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Cale Vansickle had a solid two-way game, throwing for 62 yards and a touchdown and running for 155 and two scores. Brady Hanson had 121 on the ground. Logan Jaeschke had an eight-yard touchdown catch.

Vansickle has thrown for 396 yards and four scores. His main targets have been Gauge Jones and Logan Jaeschke. Jones has seven grabs for 182 yards and Jaeschke has eight for 143. They both have two scores.

Vansickle has run for 330 yards and Hanson has 393. Both have reached paydirt five times each.

The Lions are coming off an 85-0 shaliking of Clarke. DM Christian’s defense held the Indians to 32 yards of total offense, 16 on the ground.

Lion quarterbacks Jett Each (3-for-3) and Max Town (3-for-3) were perfect for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

The Lions ran for 280 yards. Jace Fadden had 118 yards and three scores. Davis Tokheim, Andrew Clement and Garrett Braun each had touchdowns. Jake Kistenmacher and Miles Trenkamp had touchdown catches.

Conner Doohen returned an interception 40 yards for a score. Tyler Drefke returned a punt for a score and Tokheim scored two punt return touchdowns.

Each has 379 yards passing and four touchdowns on the year. Tokheim and Fadden have three touchdowns each.

Pocahontas Area (0-3, 0-0) at Manson Northwest Webster (2-1, 0-0)

The Cougars were well on their way to their first 3-0 start since 2009, when MVAOCHOU returned a kickoff with 1:32 left to top the Cougars 20-16.

Logan Moline (two yards) had the lone offensive touchdown for the Cougars. Homecoming king Matt Condon returned a kickoff 60 yards for a score.

Kamden Birkey has been the groundhog, running 59 times for 377 yards and three scores. Condon, Cooper Harman and Moline have rushing touchdowns. Condon and Moline have thrown scores to Coy Moline and Broc Patzner respectively.

The Indians have struggled out of the gate, scoring only 18 points on the season and giving up 111.

Last week they fell 35-0 to Western Christian.

On the season Carson Bunda has thrown for 398 yards and one touchdown to Gabe Ehn (22 yards). Ehn has 12 grabs for 208 yards.

Logan Shiflett has 38 carries for 238 yards and a touchdown run of 83 yards.

South Central Calhoun (2-1, 1-1) at ACGC (3-0, 2-0)

The Titans are coming off a tough 34-21 loss to Riverside a week ago.

Andrew Anderson had a big game, throwing 35 times for 257 yards and a touchdown pass to Garrett Krause. Cole Higgins had nine grabs for 166 yards.

Anderson and Caleb Juhl had rushing touchdowns.

On the year Anderson has 589 yards and three touchdowns. He has rushed for three scores as well.

Higgins has 138 yards and Juhl has 129. Both Higgins and Juhl have two touchdowns each and Mike Trott has one. Krause has two touchdown grabs and Charlie Nattess has one.

ACGC picked up a 42-11 win over Panorama. The Chargers ran for 337 yards. Mike Fuller had 149 on the ground and two scores. Joe Crawford had three touchdowns and Jackson Pfrang reached the end zone once.

Jathan South has thrown for four scores. Crawford, Thomas Skram, Taytum Bates and Payton Policky all have touchdown catches.

Crawford (344 yards), South (334) and Fuller (324) have run for a combined 11 touchdowns. Crawford and South have four each.
