CLEAN SWEEP
Gaels easily pass first tourney test
The St. Edmond volleyball team started off postseason play with a convincing sweep over Glidden-Ralston here Monday night inside the Gael gym.
Scores were 25-11, 25-19 and 25-17.
Following one of the more successful regular seasons in recent memory for the program, St. Edmond (18-11 overall) made sure there would be no letdown to begin regionals. They advance to face Coon Rapids-Bayard there on Wednesday in a Class 1A, Region 5 quarterfinal.
Mariah Myers had 18 kills with three aces, Ava Underberg added eight kills, and Ava Andrew had three aces with two kills to lead the Gaels, who have now won their most matches in a season in nearly 20 years.
“It’s hard to keep your focus up when you start off with a first set like we had,” SEHS head coach Heather Seeden said. “We kind of let off the gas in the second set into the third, so I’m glad we were able to finish it out like we did.”
Myers, a senior who will sign to play softball at the University of Iowa next month, had four of the final six points in both the second and third sets. She had at least five kills in each set.
“Mariah is a great player and it’s exciting to have her out on the floor,” Seeden said. “I thought we did a good job of getting her the ball, along with Ava and our other hitters.”
Seven different players had a kill in the opening set, as St. Edmond used a 9-2 run to close it out. Lauren Gibb, another senior, had five kills on the evening. Classmate Sasha Hess was recognized for breaking the school career digs mark, which was previously held by Hannah Huss.
“Sasha is amazing,” Seeden said. “We’re lucky to have her playing in our back row, and I’m really happy for her that she gets to have her name at the top of that list now.”
Glidden-Ralston (10-16) had just one lead all match long, scoring the first point of the third set. Lauren Hulsing led the Wildcats with nine kills and Kassidy Wenck added seven.
Sophomores Chloe Palmer and Abby Huss saw extended time on the floor in place of Faith Shirbroun, as the junior was out due to illness. Palmer had two kills and Huss one.
“I’m really proud of both of those girls for stepping in,” Seeden said. “They handled it well and Chloe did a great job serving.”
Claire O’Connor added two kills, Gibb had a pair of blocks, and both Hess and Palmer had an ace.
St. Edmond had won 17 matches two other times since 2007, doing so that season and again in 2017.
Coon Rapids-Bayard (20-5) topped Audubon in four last night and will host the Gaels next.
“The girls have already been watching film,” Seeden said. “We’ll work on a few things Tuesday in practice and get ready for Wednesday.”
