Vogel, Eastman shine at IAC
MARSHALLTOWN — Hailey Vogel and Julia Eastman combined to win three Iowa Alliance Conference championships for the Fort Dodge girls swim squad here on Thursday night, helping the Dodgers place third overall.
Fort Dodge scored 191 points, as they had three relays place in the Top-4 with six other individual swims cracking the Top-10. Ames was first and host Marshalltown finished second.
“It was an awesome meet for the girls,” FDSH head coach Ashley Beaumont said. “We were able to get some great times and beat teams we lost to in the regular season.
“The medley relay is looking extremely strong going into state. It’s definitely one we are confident in.”
Vogel earned her second automatic state qualifying standard of the season in the 50 freestyle, placing first in a time of 24.83. She also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.22, which was almost four seconds ahead of the runner-up.
“Hailey had an amazing swim in the 50,” Beaumont said. “She told me before the race she wanted to be in the 24 range, and she did exactly that. Then she goes out and destroyed the breaststroke.
“She is such a hard worker and always positive; it’s great to see her be so successful.”
Eastman was first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.87, winning by almost three full seconds. She also added a second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.95.
“Julia had great swims in both the back and fly,” Beaumont said. “She made that backstroke win look easy.”
Both Vogel and Eastman were on the runner-up 200 medley relay for FDSH, along with Gracie Harvey and Kylen Lubensky, as that quartet went 1:55.59. Ames won the race in 1:55.34.
“Gracie had a great swim in the butterfly,” Beaumont said. “She has great goals for herself and every meet she is improving.”
Vogel swam the anchor on the 200 free relay, which went 1:48.78 to place fourth. Eastman did the same on the 400 free relay, which finished fourth in 4:01.59.
Delaney O’Connor, Lubensky and Harvey completed both relays. Earlier this week, O’Connor was fourth in the diving portion of the conference meet.
“Delaney getting fourth in diving was incredible. She is doing some of the hardest dives and has a strong chance of qualifying for state.”
Harvey finished third in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.12, Lubensky was fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:52.37, Addison Daniel placed ninth in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.82, Karlee Pearson was ninth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.13, and O’Connor finished 10th in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.82.
