Weather, Iowa Lakes dampen Tritons’ spirits
The eighth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Iowa Central women’s soccer team saw their chase of a regional championship come to an end here in the rain Wednesday night.
After delaying the start of the Region XI semifinal between the Tritons and 16th-ranked Iowa Lakes multiple times due to weather concerns, it was the Lakers who scored the only goal on their way to a 1-0 victory.
Iowa Lakes (13-6 overall) now takes on Hawkeye in Waterloo this Sunday for the title. No. 15 Hawkeye (11-1-2) scored a 1-0 victory over ninth-rated Northeast in the semifinals.
Iowa Central (9-5-3) was the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season ICCAC title with an unbeaten 8-0-1 mark. The Tritons had won four straight matches overall, and were unbeaten in their last nine, with seven clean sheets recorded.
As a league champion and Top-10 squad, Iowa Central will be in the hunt for one of the four at-large selections when the brackets for the NJCAA Div. II Championships are released.
This was the final home match for sophomores Nevaeh Brown, Klair Heim, Renata Mendez Rojas, Perla Rios, Eden Palkovic, Emma Wright and Paige Arrowood, who went a combined 13-2-1 over the past two seasons.
