Wildcats finish perfect in league
HUMBOLDT — Top-ranked Humboldt scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to dig out of a hole against rival Webster City on Friday.
The Wildcats (8-1 overall, 5-0 Class 3A, District 2) survived an early burst from the Lynx (3-6, 2-3) for a 28-14 victory.
Coen Matson and Chase Flaherty connected three times in the second half, and twice for scores to tie the game at 14-14.
Matson hit Flaherty from four yards out to make it 14-7. Webster City fumbled after the kickoff and Humboldt recovered.
Matson again found Flaherty, this time from 19 yards, to time the game at 14-14 with 8:26 left in the third.
Webster City went on a methodical drive, coming up short at the goal line.
Humboldt marched 99 yards and capped off the insurance drive with an 18-yard Matson to Valley Davis touchdown.
Jackson Flaherty set up the final Humboldt touchdown with an interception.
Matson hit Flaherty for one more touchdown to close the scoring.
