Algona rips Harlan, 49-6
ALGONA — The Algona football team showed they are still a Class 3A threat, even without star quarterback Alex Manske.
Nathan Manske, the sophomore brother of the Iowa State University commit, tossed two first-half touchdown passes as the Bulldogs crushed one of the more storied programs in the state, Harlan, to advance on Friday by a final of 49-6.
With the win, Algona (9-1 overall) will now face Mount Vernon this coming Friday for a spot in the semifinals and the UNI-Dome.
Manske threw for almost 200 yards with two scores to University of Iowa baseball commit Tate Slagle in the opening half as the Bulldogs built a commanding 35-0 lead.
Slagle had five receptions for over 100 yards and the two scores before the break while Jack Limbaugh, a future Cyclone, ran in two short TDs. Limbaugh caught a touchdown from Manske in the third.
Evan Allie had a rushing score in the first half for Algona, which was bounced from the postseason in the opening round last year.
The Bulldog defense held Harlan (6-4) to under 100 yards of total offense in the first half, with the Cyclones putting points on the board only after falling behind, 42-0.
Mount Vernon (9-1) advanced with a 42-0 victory over Carroll.
