Another victory for Triton men

The Iowa Central men are playing at a high level with the start of the ICCAC season right around the corner.

Behind a big second half, the Tritons stretched their win streak to five with a 72-68 victory over Black Hawk College here Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Jalen Wynter and Vice Grbic led Iowa Central (6-2 overall) with 15 points each, while Terrius Walker added 13. Six other Tritons scored baskets as they erased a five-point halftime deficit.

Jordan Cain filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, Walker added a team-high eight rebounds and Wynter grabbed six. Lane Campbell chipped in six points, five boards and four assists.

“I’m happy with the resolve of our team to get a win,” ICCC head coach Ryan Kirsch said. “We did not play very well overall, but there are going to be nights like that for us all year long I’m sure with as competitive as the ICCAC is.

“I was just happy to see our team find a way to will themselves to victory.”

Grbic scored all 15 of his points in the final 20 minutes, going 6 of 7 from the field while hitting all three of his free throws. Wynter scored 11 of his 15 during that stretch, knocking down three 3-pointers. Cain, Walker and Irakli Akhalaia combined for 15 in the second half to help the comeback.

For Black Hawk, Stephen Reed scored 18, Tsuirad Moore had 15 and Jase Whiteman 12.

“Anytime you can get a team under 40 percent (shooting from the field), that’s pretty darn good,” Kirsch said. “We contested, helped and rotated, doing enough to make it hard for them.”

Iowa Central held a plus-10 advantage on points in the paint to help overcome the 20 points lack Hawk scored off 18 turnovers.

The Tritons hit the road to face seventh-ranked (Div. I) Indian Hills Tuesday in Ottumwa before returning home on Saturday for the conference opener vs. Western Iowa Tech.
