Dodgers compete at Clash
The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team competed at the Triton Clash on Tuesday.
The Dodgers went 0-5, losing to Decorah (60-18), SWAT (48-15), Hinton (54-30), Crestwood (47-23) and Riverside (36-36 on tie-breaker).
“Overall we had a good day,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “I thought we saw some good things and the girls are learning. Some of these girls are starting to figure it out.”
Returning two-time state qualifier Mariaha Benedict went 5-0 on the day with three falls, a technical fall and a forfeit win.
“We talked about getting a couple of takedowns before getting the pin,” Koenig said. “She needs to go out there and do some things that she can’t get in practice.”
Freshman Brooklyn Nelson had four victories, two falls, a decision and forfeit.
“With Brooklyn she just has to not focus on the little things that don’t matter,” Koenig said. “She’s still young, but she’s doing a great job.
“She takes what I say and listens to it — one match at a time. If you get beat you get beat. She beat two state qualifiers in this tournament.”
J.J. Leyva earned three falls, while Makayla Liska had two falls and a forfeit.
Addie Mikesell had three forfeit wins, Jessenia Elias had two forfeits and Charlie Stucky won by fall.
Humboldt placed ninth. Cedar Falls was the team champion, going 5-0.
The Wildcats beat Crestwood (40-36), SWAT (48-36) and Spencer (48-30). Humboldt lost to Lewis Central (60-18) and Vinton-Shellsburg (60-24).
Brooklyn Robinson went 5-0 with two falls and three forfeits. Danica Diedrick, Gracey may and Letty Jenson all had four wins. Diedrick had four falls, while May and Jenson had two each.
Laina Dettmann and Elyse Olson had three wins. Dettmann had three falls and Olson had a major decision. Dayton Cleghorn picked up two wins.
