Dodgers earn seven state swim bids
AMES — Since her freshman year, Julia Eastman had a goal on her radar.
On Saturday, she reached that plateau.
The Fort Dodge senior broke a 39-year old school record as she earned a regional title — a feat which she would later double up.
The Dodgers will be represented in seven state events overall.
“What an incredible meet for Fort Dodge swimming,” said FDSH head coach Ashley Beaumont. “We are taking seven events to the state meet, and the girls keep dropping times.
“I’m so proud of all of them and the work they have put in.”
Eastman, a Southeast Valley student, claimed regional titles in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
“It was such an awesome feeling for Julia to win two regional championships,” Beaumont said. “She broke the last swim record that was on the books since I’ve been here.
“That’s something she has talked about since she was a freshman. She didn’t just beat it — she destroyed it.”
Senior Hailey Vogel was also a double-event winner, claiming gold in the 50 freestyle while also grabbing a third-place showing in the 100 breaststroke.
The quartet of Eastman, Vogel, junior Gracie Harvey and sophomore Kylen Lubensky were runner-ups in the 200 medley.
Fort Dodge placed fifth in the 400 freestyle, swam by Vogel, Harvey, senior Delaney O’Connor and Eastman.
O’Connor was the first qualifier for the Dodgers, advancing to state on Thursday with a fifth-place finish in the diving event. O’Connor will be the program’s first state diver since 1998.
Ames won the regional title with 548 points. Newton (355) was second, followed by Fort Dodge (246).
O’Connor enters the state meet with the 31st-best score of 309.10.
Algona junior Taylor Reese has the seventh best score entering the diving event at state with a total of 427.95.
Eastman topped the 100 butterfly record that was set in 1985, eclipsing the previous record of 59.44 with a new mark of 58.51.
Under Beaumont, the Dodgers have now broken every swim record on the books other than diving.
In her 100 backstroke victory, Eastman touched the wall in 58.56 — nearly two seconds faster than Ames runner up Ky Thompson (1:00.43). Eastman was 0.2 seconds off of the school record.
Eastman enters state with the seventh-best time in the 100 butterfly. She is sixth in the 100 backstroke.
Vogel also set a school record in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 24.48. She topped Saylor Horras (24.62) of Ames on Saturday.
Vogel clocked a 1:06.18 during her third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Vogel’s time in the 50 freestyle is the eighth best in the state. Her 100 breaststroke time is seventh.
“Before her (Vogel’s) race (in the 50), she knew what time she wanted,” Beaumont said. “She went out and got it and looked amazing.
“In the 100, she didn’t win, but keeps improving her time.”
The Dodgers’ 200 medley team clocked a 1:51.98. The 400 freestyle relay squad clocked a 3:52.53.
“It’s pretty exciting that medley relay ranked ninth in the state,” Beaumont said. “It’s nice to see two seniors, a junior and a sophomore make it.
“Qualifying ninth isn’t the greatest because we won’t quite be in the fast heat, but we come in with the fastest time in our heat.”
The 200 medley is sitting ninth. The 400 relay squad is 27th.
“We took a gamble with the 400 freestyle and went for that,” Beaumont said. “We dropped seven seconds, but it seemed like everyone also loaded up their 400 free (lineups).”
The state meet will begin on Friday in Marshalltown with diving. The swimming portion and diving finals will be held on Saturday.
“We just need to keep focus and work on details,” Beaumont said. “In our relays we have to focus on exchanges and coming up with a gameplan.
“We know what we are doing. All five have been on a state team before.”
