Iowa Central drops heartbreaker, 7-3
EL DORADO, Kan. — The Iowa Central football team suffered another heartbreaking defeat here Saturday in their regular season finale.
After taking a 3-0 lead on No. 11 Butler with just under two minutes to go in what had been a defensive battle throughout, the Grizzlies marched 75 yards over nine plays, scoring with just five seconds left for a 7-3 victory.
Jayson Zardavets capped off the drive, as Butler remained unbeaten all-time vs. the Tritons.
Nolan Gustafson, a Humboldt grad, had given Iowa Central (5-6 overall) the lead when he booted through a 40-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining on the clock. The kick finished off an eight-play, 57-yard drive that took up almost five minutes.
Gustafson’s kick came on the series immediately following a missed field goal by Butler of 33 yards that was wide left. Cyncir Bowers ran for 47 yards on the drive, finishing the game with 91 yards on 18 carries.
The Grizzlies converted a third-and-6 on their game-winning possession, as the play was pushed further down the field for a targeting penalty on Iowa Central. On fourth-and-6 from the ICCC 26, Zardavets hit Daveon Walker for 17 yards to set up the TD one player later after a pass interference was called on the Tritons.
Ty Purdy threw for 75 yards on 9 of 18 passing while Bryce Anderson had three receptions for Iowa Central. Jawarren Corbin had an interception and both Howard Brown and Taylor Schaefer recorded a sack each.
