Record day at state cross country meet
If there was any doubt about the Marissa Ferebee and the Pella cross country team, they were silenced here Friday at the state championships.
Ferebee broke 17 minutes to top teammates Elsie Brenneman and Ruth Dunham and capture the individual Class 3A title for a second consecutive season at Lakeside Golf Course.
Pella finished with a total of 23 points, as all five counting runners placed in the Top-10. Sioux Center was second followed by Mount Vernon-Lisbon, Solon and Winterset.
Ferebee shattered the meet record with a time of 16:30.9 while also setting an all-time best for any course in Iowa. She also won the individual championship last year, and previously went under 17 minutes earlier this season.
The Dutch have now won three consecutive state team titles, as the 23 total team points was a state-meet record.
More history was made later in the day when Western Dubuque’s Quentin Nauman became just the second boy to break 15 minutes, securing the 3A title over defending race winner Canaan Dunham of Pella. Nauman, a junior, went 14:59.6, winning by 17 seconds.
Gilbert scored team gold ahead of Des Moines Christian and Pella.
Algona junior Gavin Weber was one of 44 runners in 3A to crack 17 minutes on a perfect day, finishing 40th overall in 16:59.1.
Piper Messerly of Dallas Center-Grimes won the girls 4A title over Anika Mohrhauser of Ankeny Centennial. Messerly, a sophomore, went 17:58 compared to 18:02 by Mohrhauser, a senior.
Ethan Zuber of Ankeny earned his second 4A individual championship, as the senior went 15:01. Jaden Merrick of Cedar Falls was the runner-up.
Pleasant Valley knocked off Johnston for team gold in the girls standings while Cedar Falls bested West Des Moines Dowling for the boys crown.
Saturday will see 1A and 2A hit the course with the St. Edmond boys in action. Also in 1A will be Julia Swift of Bishop Garrigan, Newell-Fonda’s Mareni Brabec and Danika Meyer, Tyra Schupbach of West Bend-Mallard and Iris Melody from South Central Calhoun.
Competing in 2A will be Manson Northwest Webster’s Alyssa Richman and Thatcher Oswald, East Sac County’s Riley Aragon and Landon Sporrer, Noah Hinote of Greene County and Redge Potts from South Central Calhoun.
