Triton men stretch win streak, 88-84
The Iowa Central men were able to keep No. 20 Kansas City-Kansas at bay just long enough here Tuesday night to stretch their win streak to four with an 88-84 victory inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
CJ Mitchell and Aleix Sempere Serrano led six Tritons (5-2 overall) in doubles figures with 14 each, as Lane Campbell and Jordan Cain both scored 13. Jalen Wynter and Terrius Walker, one of three returning sophomores from a year ago, added 12.
Iowa Central erased a three-point deficit at the break when Cain knocked down a 3-pointer less than two minutes into the second half. They would not trail again, building the lead back up to as many as 13 thanks to a 28-12 run.
“I thought in the first half, we really just weren’t finishing possessions on defense,” ICCC head coach Ryan Kirsch said. “They got off to a hot start and were just lights-out from 3 (hitting 9 of 12), so credit to them as they hit some big shots.
“We made some adjustments at the half and they cooled off. Our rotations got better, cleaner and we got out and scored.”
Walker pulled down six rebounds with Wynter, Cain, Serrano and Irakli Akhalaia each grabbing four. Campbell dished out five assists and Cain had four of Iowa Central’s 11 team steals.
The Tritons shot 53 percent from the field and committed just 10 turnovers, but did miss eight free throws. Kansas City-Kansas (5-3) hit a dozen 3-pointers and held a 35-29 advantage on the glass, but saw 19 miscues get turned into 28 points.
“It was a complete team effort,” Kirsch said. “Wynter and Cain got going in the second half and we were able to come out with the victory.”
For Kansas City-Kansas, BJ Stewart had a game-high 21 points with Camron Williford adding 19.
Iowa Central remains at home, as they host Black Hawk College back here on Saturday at 3 p.m. before a road trip next Tuesday to Ottumwa to face Indian Hills. They close out the month on Saturday, Nov. 30 vs. Western Iowa Tech in the ICCAC season opener.
