Tritons clear century mark again
The Iowa Central men stretched their win streak to three and surpassed 100 points for the second straight time at Hodges Fieldhouse here Friday night.
Behind seven players in double figures, the Tritons topped Mount Mercy JV, 104-76.
Jalen Wynter and CJ Mitchell led the balanced attack with 14 points each for Iowa Central (4-2 overall). Jordan Cain added 13, Daviyon Gaston had 12 and Irakli Akhalaia, Aleix Sempere Serrano and Vice Grbic each scored 10.
“Getting seven gys in double figures was a cool thing,” ICCC head coach Ryan Kirsch said. “We challenged the group to win the rebound battle, which we were able to do, and to win the turnover battle, which we also did. I liked that we stayed under 12 turnovers, so that was a positive.”
The Tritons knocked down 10 three-pointers as a team and shot 52 percent from the floor. Serrano added seven rebounds with both Akhalaia and Terrius Walker each grabbing six. Cain had five steals and both Lane Campbell and Akhalaia dished out five assists.
Iowa Central has 22 assists on 42 made baskets and committed just 10 turnovers, holding Mount Mercy JV 38 points in both halves. Antonio Martinez had 15 to lead the Mustangs with Jason Martinez adding 14.
“I’m happy with the effort,” Kirsch said. “We did a great job of sharing the basketball and I’m ecstatic with 22 assists on 42 field goals. We still have things we can improve upon and we’ll get back to work before Tuesday.”
While both teams grabbed 24 rebounds each, the Tritons were plus-18 on the offensive glass as Akhalaia had four offensive boards.
Iowa Central returns to action Tuesday when they host Kansas City-Kansas at 6:30 p.m. They play their fourth straight home game next Saturday, Nov. 23 vs. Black Hawk before heading to Indian Hills on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
