Crimmins second for Gaels

STORY CITY — St. Edmond’s Matthew Crimmins had a strong day at the Norsemen Invitational on Saturday.

Crimmins went 3-1 on the day and finished as the 132 pound runner up.

The Gael 132-pounder lost to Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Charlie Showalter (15-1) in the championship round, 17-2.

Crimmins (4-1) dominated his way to the finals with two falls and a major decision.

In the first round he pinned Atlantic’s Carter Hadley in 55 seconds. He picked up a fall in 1:47 over Danel Sutcliff of St. Ansgar in the quarterfinals and blanked Jayse Jensen of Winterset 10-0 in the semifinals.

“It was a great day for Matthew,” said St. Edmond head coach Kaden McClintock. “He beat a state qualifier (Jensen) with a major decision in the semifinals.”

Adam Walker (285), who just returned to the lineup picked up a fifth place showing. Walker pinned Mario Rangel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 1:02.

Walker lost to Earlham’s Keegan Long 7-0 in the semifinals. Walker lost by fall to Jesus Baez of Eagle Grove in 3:11.

Walker (5-2) pinned Woodward-Granger’s Alexander Kasner in 40 seconds.

“Adam had a great day. He had a tough match in the semifinals,” McClintock said. “It will be key for him to get some more mat time and he will get better as he goes.”

Sam Myer (144) placed eighth. He picked up a major decision, a fall on the consolation side.

“I’m excited where we are at,” McClintock said. “They’re all learning lessons and we want to be our best in February.

“Over break we will be going over our technique.”

Baez (13-5) placed third for the Eagles. He pinned Rangel in 4:32 of the third place match.

In the first round he pinned Robbie Larsen of Roland-Story in 3:25. On the consolation side he had a decision in overtime and fall, winning three straight matches.

Hayden Schafer was fourth at 157 pounds. Schafer (16-2) earned two falls and a decision.
