FAST BREAK

The St. Edmond boys head into the Christmas break with plenty of momentum following a 65-35 victory over Hampton-Dumont/CAL here Friday night.

But some of those positive vibes were silenced after junior Carson Bargfrede suffered a serious injury inside the SEHS gym.

Bargfrede came down hard on his left leg in the first half on a fast-break. Players from both sides immediately motioned for medical attention.

After getting to his feet, Bargfrede would remain on the bench with his knee on ice for the remainder of the night.

“He’ll get an MRI and we’ll see from there,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “It’s a tough situation and you just hope for the best.”

The Gaels (5-0 overall, 3-0 in North Central Conference) put the pesky Bulldogs (1-4, 0-3) away in the second half on the heels of a 38-12 run. Hunter Horn scored a game-high 20 with Jakob Koopman and Grant Galles each adding 12.

Galles had 10 of his points in the third quarter, including a key 3-pointer and another bucket that helped push the lead to double digits.

“Grant really made some big energy plays,” Kochendorfer said. “It was great to see that. It not only helped our guys but it got the energy going from the crowd.

“We were getting good looks in the first, but they weren’t falling. We told the guys to just keep shooting it and it worked out.”

Battling against the 6-foot-7 Brady Harr inside, St. Edmond was able to keep the rebound difference close. Koopman and Galles both finished with six while Horn had five.

Harr, the brother of former H-D/CAL standout Scott Harr, was held to 10 points, adding 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. The Bulldogs are coached by ex-Fort Dodge Senior High standout Brian Niesen.

“You have to give them credit there in the first half, as (Hampton-Dumont/CAL) did a nice job of making us play to their style,” Kochendorfer said. “I thought we came out in the second half and played much better defense and the shots started to fall.”

St. Edmond is off to its best start since 2013-14, when they opened the year 9-0 and finished 18-6 overall. They lead the series vs. the Bulldogs, 29-6, snapping a five-game losing skid to them with the win.

Horn has now scored 607 points in 29 games with St. Edmond, who returns to action on Jan. 2 when they play South Hamilton in Des Moines from Wells Fargo Arena as part of the Iowa Wolves High School Hoops Series.
