Gaels can’t quite catch Iowa Falls-Alden

IOWA FALLS — The St. Edmond girls were denied a road win here Thursday night, falling at Iowa Falls-Alden, 45-39.

The game was originally scheduled to be played last Friday, but inclement weather forced it to be canceled. The Gael boys will make up their game with the Cadets on Jan. 14 in Iowa Falls.

With just over five minutes to play in the fourth, Josie Harvey gave St. Edmond (1-4 overall, 0-2 in the North Central Conference) a 31-29 lead on a runner. However, it was Iowa Falls-Alden (5-2, 2-1) that made the last rally of the evening to prevail.

Payton Bradley had a team-high 12 points for St. Edmond, with Chloe Palmer adding 11.

Harvey finished with six. Sophia Schlienz and Abby Huss each chipped in four.

“We were down at the half, but we came out in the third quarter and executed on the offensive end,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “The first half was a lot like the Algona game where we just could’t get shots to fall. We were executing and making the right decisions, we just couldn’t make anything.

“There in the third we started to get them to fall.”

The Cadets made 15 more free throws and were led by 14 points from Cidni Phipps. Elody England had 12 and Brooklyn Handeland added nine.

“We played solid on defense,” Tracy said. “We had a couple breakdowns there late and they took advantage. Credit to them and (head coach) Michael Collison. He has them playing well right now.”

St. Edmond returns home on Friday night to host No. 13 (Class 3A) Hampton-Dumont/CAL beginning at 6:15 p.m.
