Gaels stay unbeaten

ALGONA — The St. Edmond boys are off to one of their best starts in recent memory, improving to 4-0 here Tuesday night with a 69-53 victory over Algona.

Hunter Horn led the Gaels (4-0 overall, 2-0 in North Central Conference) with 31 points while Carson Bargfrede added 16.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-1) came out strong, taking control with a 17-12 lead after the first. It was all St. Edmond from there, as they outscored Algona in the second, 18-10, to take a three-point lead into the break.

In the third, the Gaels would go up by as many as 12 before the Bulldogs rallied back to tie it. A late surge from St. Edmond gave them a seven-point advantage heading to the fourth, as they would hold Algona to just nine points over the final eight minutes.

Ben Helmers has 25 to lead the Bulldogs with Evan Allie adding seven.

Sophomore Ty Mericle came off the bench to hit a pair of key 3-pointers for the Gaels, who split the season series with Algona last year.

St. Edmond finally returns home on Friday to host Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Algona takes on Webster City Friday and Bishop Garrigan Saturday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
