No. 7 DMACC rallies past Iowa Central men
A rough second half left the Iowa Central men on the wrong end of a 70-57 decision here Wednesday night vs. seventh-ranked Des Moines Area inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
The Tritons (8-6 overall, 2-3 in ICCAC) saw a six-point halftime deficit get erased by the Bears (13-2, 4-1), who would lead throughout after the 11-minute mark.
Jordan Cain scored 12 and Jalen Wynter added 11, but the two finished only 8-for-27 from the field and 2 of 16 from behind the 3-point line. As a team, Iowa Central shot just 13 percent from deep and 33 percent for the game.
Dylan Omweno came off the bench to provide a spark for DMACC, scoring a game-high 19 with five made triples. Da’Shon Foster added 16 and 11 rebounds, Jamal Ambrose scored 13 and Trevian Carson had 10 with eight boards and four blocked shots.
Iowa Central was looking to close the first half of the season off with some momentum after dropping back-to-back games to No. 9 Ellsworth and Iowa Lakes. And for 20-plus minutes, they appeared headed in the direction.
Cain and Wynter both had seven in the opening half as the defense forced 15 turnovers. The Bears cut their mistakes down to seven over the final 20 miuntes and shot 17-for-30 from the field.
Fisher and Ambrose combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds after the break, as they were a big piece of a 21-13 edge on the glass during that time for Des Moines Area.
CJ Mitchell added eight points, Daviyon Gaston had seven steals and six rebounds, and Irakli Akhalaia added seven points for the Tritons.
Wynter, a freshman, has reached double figures in scoring 10 times over his last 11 games. Cain, also a freshman, has done so in five of his last six and 11 times this season.
Iowa Central returns to action in 2025 when they head to Council Bluffs on Saturday, Jan. 4 to play 21st-ranked Iowa Western.
