Gael girls dominate for first win
GOWRIE — The St. Edmond girls emphatically reached the win column for the first time here on Tuesday night.
The Gaels (1-2 overall) rolled to a 53-18 victory over Southeast Valley (0-4).
“It’s good to get an early-season win,” said SEHS head coach CJ Tracy. “This group of girls has played a lot of basketball together.
“It’s only game three, and this was a chance for us to focus on some things and move forward to our conference opener on Friday.”
The victory ended a six-game overall losing streak to the Jaguars.
“We used our quickness to our advantage,” Tracy said. “We were able to put our prees on and jumped the passing lanes to get fast break points.”
Four Gaels reached double figures, led by Josie Harvey’s 14 points. Abby Huss checked in with 11 and Chloe Palmer had 10. Payton Bradley chipped in with nine.
“We’ve been able to get multiple girls into the scoring column,” Tracy said. “Our scoring is pretty even all the way around.
“We are playing well as a team and looking for the open shots.”
The Gaels came out of the gates strong, building a 24-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Gaels took a 27-point lead into halftime.
St. Edmond hit five three pointers on the night, led by Huss’ three. Schlienz and Bradley had one each.
“It definitely builds that confidence and get one in the win column,” Tracy said. “We’re working better as a team and continue to strive to get better.”
Ryleigh McFarland had 11 points to lead Southeast Valley.
The Gaels are back in action on Friday when they open North Central Conference play at Iowa Falls-Alden. Tip is set for 6:15 p.m.
