Triton Sturgis an All-American
Olivia Strugis capped off her two-year career with the Iowa Central volleyball program by becoming the latest Triton to earn All-American honors.
The sophomore landed on the NJCAA third team as one of three ICCAC Div. II players.
Kirkwood’s Kaci Johnson was on the first squad, and Des Moines Area’s Abbi Brenizer made the second.
Strugis helped the Tritons reach the national tournament last month and place second in the conference. Iowa Central went 30-9 this past season, recording a third straight season with at least 30 wins.
The former Manson Northwest Webster standout is the 22nd Triton player to earn All-American honors since 2003, and the 11th since 2020 alone.
“Becoming an All-American is such an honor,” Sturgis said. “It has been a goal of mine since my freshman year. In fact, before the season starts, our coaches ask us what are some goals of ours. My top goal was to become an All-American player.”
Sturgis recorded 298 kills with 172 total blocks and 46 digs this past season. As a freshman, she tallied 304 kills with 153 total blocks and 41 digs.
While she has yet to decide where she will transfer to in the spring, Sturgis does plan on continuing to play volleyball.
“I couldn’t have accomplished my successes without my teammates, and of course, my coaches,” she said. “I will forever cherish my time at Iowa Central.”
Sturgis is just the third area player to be named an All-American volleyball player for the Tritons, joining former Humboldt standout Jori Hajek and Algona prep Ali Grein.
