Triton women end losing streak
The Iowa Central women snapped a four-game losing skid with a 65-62 victory over the Waldorf JV here Saturday inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
After falling wind 21-14 following the first, the Tritons (5-4 overall) recovered, outscoring the Warriors 31-16 before the half.
Ashlin Jacobsen scored a game-high 20 points with Hannah Bogdonovich adding 14. Former Fort Dodge Senior High standout Lainey Maehl had nine points with 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 34 minutes.
For Waldorf, Saniya Wright had 17 off the bench with Charlotte Mills and Sophia Laurel both scoring 11.
Iowa Central was 13-for-21 from the field and 4 of 5 from the 3-point line in the second quarter, as Jacobsen scored 14.
“We challenged our team to play for 40 minutes and snap this losing streak,” ICCC head coach Sabah Dickerson said. “Although we looked pretty loose at shootaround, we came out flat in the first quarter. Our team responded to the pace that Waldorf tried to establish and had a strong second quarter.”
The Warriors cut the deficit down with a 17-point third quarter, as both teams combined for just 17 in the fourth and final 10 minutes, allowing the Tritons to survive. Jacobsen, Kiara Baptiste, Amaya Terrell and Ruby Stuckemeyer each scored in the fourth.
Sharon Greek added seven points off the bench and Terrell finished with seven, six rebounds and four assists.
“We are happy that the team closed out this game as Waldorf stayed aggressive late,” Dickerson said. “We turn our attention to Region 11 now. December is a loaded schedule and we have to continue to improve one game at a time.”
Iowa Central begins ICCAC play on Wednesday when they travel to top-ranked Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids.
