2-OT THRILLER
Often times when fighting to end a losing streak, the ball just does not seem to fall in your favor.
That is what the Iowa Central women are experiencing right now, as they suffered an 11th consecutive defeat on Wednesday night, losing to Iowa Lakes by a final of 70-61 in double-overtime.
With a couple of chances to win the game in both regulation and the first extra session, the Tritons (5-15 overall, 0-10 in ICCAC) ran out of gas late vs. the Lakers (9-12, 4-6), who outscored them 11-2 in the final five minutes.
Ashlin Jacobsen scored 20 points, Lainey Maehl added 15 points, with 12 rebounds and Kiara Baptiste chipped in 11 for Iowa Central.
Iowa Lakes was paced by Gracelyn Deputy’s 30 points, as she was 12 of 24 from the field and played 41 of the 50 minutes overall. Paige Martin added 13 points for the Lakers.
Maehl, a Fort Dodge Senior High grad, tied the game at 50-all in regulation with a made free throw with 14 seconds left. Both teams had chances to win it, but neither could score a bucket as time expired.
The Tritons made three more triples than the Lakers, as both teams struggled from the field, shooting a combined 48-for-139. Each team made 12 free throws and the rebounding difference was just two.
Iowa Central did commit 26 turnovers with led to 30 points for Iowa Lakes, who also held a 12-6 advantage on second-chance points. After being outscored 12-3 in the second quarter, the Tritons responded, battling back to send the game to overtime.
Olivia Miller knocked down three 3-pointers off the bench for the Tritons, finishing with nine points. Baptiste also had nine rebounds with Sharon Greek grabbing six and Catherine Clemente blocking four shots with five boards.
Maehl has reached double figures in points in four consecutive games and nine times overall this year.
Iowa Central hits the road for a matchup with Ellsworth in Iowa Falls this Saturday before returning home to host No. 1 Kirkwood next Wednesday night.
