Area wrestlers hit mat for NCC glory
ALGONA — St. Edmond’s Sam Myer will look for his fourth North Central Conference medal and first championship as the Gaels head to Algona on Saturday.
Action begins at 10 a.m. in the Algona High School gym.
Last season’s team championship came down to three points as Algona claimed the championship with 213 points. Humboldt (210) was second, followed by Hampton-Dumont-CAL (193.5).
Myer placed fourth last season, losing in the semifinals, but bouncing back for a fourth place finish. As a sophomore Myer was second and finished sixth in his freshman campaign.
Algona claimed five championships.
Isaac Wilson (120), Barrett Morgan (138), Ashton Moreno (144), Tate Slagle (150) and Taevyn Zinnel (157) were champions.
Slagle is a two-time champion and three-time finalist. Morgan has won an NCC title his first two seasons on the mat.
For the Wildcats last year Sam Knight (106), Broedy Hendricks (165), and Gaige Allen were champions.
On the backside the Wildcats had two runner ups and four bronze medalists. Cyler Cirks was second at 132 pounds and Brady Beers was a 138 runner up.
Placing third was Aden Prenger (113), Owen Mayall (120), Tyce Clarken (126), and Jaxson Kirkhhoff (144).
Cirks is a three-time medalist, placing second twice and earning bronze once.
Webster City claimed two champions last year. Linden Phetxoumphone, who now wrestles for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was the 113 pound champion.
Carson Doolittle joined his brother Drake Doolittle as a four-time NCC champion.
